As a result of the congregation’s vote to focus on the issue of global warming, the Climate Change Action Team CCAT was formed this past spring. The CCAT meets regularly and welcomes participation at any level – attend a meeting, assist in planning an activity, or participate in an action. Whatever you can do helps us all. In the words of Edward Everett Hale, "I am only one; but still I am one. I cannot do everything; but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do."
CCAT Actions Taken So Far
The UUCMC congregation unanimously passed a position statement Climate Change Statement, which was constructed by the CCAT. A press release was issued.
The CCAT held a "Counter the Contrarians" series of three classes to learn how to respond to fallacious climate contrarian arguments, which are obstructing a sound climate policy in the US. Jan Dash and Linda Beltran led the classes.
The classes led to one-line responses to fallacious contrarian claims, now on the popular Skeptical Science website and the iPhone articles Rebutting skeptic arguments in a single line and Skeptic Arguments and What the Science Says
The UUCMC is mentioned, giving us wide Internet exposure.
The Social Action Committee, supported by 85 signers, passed the Statement by the UUCMC Social Action Committee Opposing Cuts in Clean Energy in NJ resolution constructed by the CCAT against cuts in the NJ Clean Energy budget. The resolution was sent to NJ State Legislators.
The UUCMC participated in the UUA's 40/40/40 ethical eating initiative, which was reported in the local press in a big article with pictures.
CCAT members give public talks on Climate Change.
The CCAT supports the UUCMC Seventh Generation project, as well as other UUCMC environmental initiatives.
CCAT actions planned in the near future
