We miss you when you are not here! Recently, I was reviewing attendance numbers and patterns for our RE program. I do this regularly to make sure that we have enough to make RE happen: enough chairs, teachers, supplies, food. We will always have enough for whomever walks through our doors, but recently, some of you haven’t passed through as often as before. I asked a question recently to our Religious Education Committee: Why don’t families come when they are not teaching or leading a program? Every answer was different, and many talked about how busy our lives have become. They in turn asked me, why should we make it a priority to be here as many Sundays as we can? I wasn’t expecting this question in return, but my answer went something like this:
We all lead very busy lives, with many things competing for our attention. UUCMC is the place that you come to prepare you for those crazy busy weeks. It is within this community that you can find your grounding, centering and strength to carry on through all that life throws your way. UUCMC is unlike other places in our society where we are often segregated by our age groups, classes, gender or culture. We are a community that is intentionally multigenerational and multicultural. We are a community with high values and principles that we practice in the world every chance we get. We are a congregation of generous, loving people who welcome you as you are, whoever you are. Last but certainly not least, together we are building a future for our children and for Unitarian Universalism.
We miss your smiling faces when you are not here. It takes all of us to make these wonderful ideas reality. I hope to see you every Sunday
In Community, Michelle
