Building Bridges: Monthly DRE Column

By Michelle McKenzie-Creech, Director of Religious Education at UUCMC

February 2011 PDF Print E-mail

Our religious education program could not be a success without the support of parents and members of the congregation who teach, serve as youth advisors, and participate in RE program activities. It is with deep gratitude that I thank all who help make our program what it is today. All of this work is supported by the Religious Education Committee.

The REC is charged with the management and oversight of all of those programs. The REC plays a critical role in supporting me as Director of Religious Education and our committed volunteers. They help make special programs like Mystery Friends, Stone Soup Supper, Social Action Sundays and Summer of Arts a reality. They ensure we have childcare for Sunday and for congregational meetings. They are the keepers of our safe congregation policies that help make this a safe space for our children. They help make important decisions regarding RE finances, curriculum, youth programs and everything in between. And when I come with new ideas, even last minute ones, they seem to always make it happen.

And even though they probably should not take on another thing, they are a part of our teaching teams or youth advisors. They do this with a team of six: Carolyn Weaver, Sari Alburtus, Joan Farkas, Aimee VanDuyne, Jeannean Vreeland and Alice Barlow.

I lift up the work of these ladies because they lift me up. Much of their work is behind the scenes but they are instrumental in carrying the mission of our Religious Education program.  I also hope you will consider joining them. The committee meets the first Tuesday of each month at 7:00. If committee work is not your passion, we need help with various projects this year and for our summer programs. I hope you will consider becoming a part of our RE family.

Yours in community,
Michelle
