Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Monmouth County Social Action We have been certified as a Green
Sanctuary. From the April 2008 UUCMC Newsletter Share the Plate – HABcore, the recipient for February, received a check for $917.20. Our recipient for March was Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties. Dan Ciaglia , who serves on the Food Bank board, talked with the RE classes about what this organization does to help alleviate hunger. RE collected food for the Food Bank throughout the month. Our recipient for April will be Doctors Without Borders. Don't forget to send your suggestions for next year's recipients to Jim McCorkel or Irene Gibson or leave in the SA box in the office. Peace and Justice – On March 31 three peace and justice advocates, Toni Mallone from Pax Christi, Fr. Ron Cioffi, and Tom Mahedy, will speak about their road to peace. This is a free program. Come and bring a friend! Family Promise of Monmouth County – Anne and Sam Shramko and Maxine and Bob Guenther provided a meal and hosting on March 25; Barbara and Irwin Schpok and Irene Gibson hosted on March 28. Judith Carluccio is spearheading a program to bring arts programs to families in this program. See separate notice. Green Sanctuary – Steve Knowlton and Bob Guenther are meeting with the ten families in the first phase of the 7th Generation Project to get a baseline for evaluating savings in the coming year in home heating fuel, electricity and gasoline. NJ Environmental Federation is sponsoring an environmental conference on Sat., April 5. Fliers available at SA table. April 20 is our Earth Day celebration, where we will present an “Eco-Hero” Award. The Kitchen at St. Marks – Barbara Vallin is doing a great job of providing volunteers to serve lunches to about 50 people on the fourth Friday of each month. Monmouth County Cool Cities Partnership hosted a very successful Mayor's Breakfast on March 8. There will be a follow-up meeting on May 17 with more information that towns can use to become more “green” AND save money. Please encourage your mayor to attend. Low Income Housing – Bill Nordahl continues to advocate for more housing for low-income families in NJ through Concerned Citizens and the Fort Monmouth Revitalization Hearings. Network of Spiritual Progressives is hosting a lecture and discussion with international economist Dr. James B. Quilligan on April 13 from 2-4pm. UU-United Nations Office is sponsoring an intergenerational conference, “Picking Up the Pieces – Buiding a Culture of Peace” at the UN April 3-5. Rev. William Sinkford is one of the speakers. Nuclear Watch – Laura Cayford suggests that if you are in favor of having loan guarantees for new nuclear reactors denied, you should call Senator Lautenberg (888-398-1642). Visit our Social Action table for more information on our projects, to sign up to volunteer, or to purchase Fair Trade, organic, shade-grown coffee @ $7/pound. Bring in your old cell phones and printer cartridges (except Epson) for recycling. Our next Social Action meeting is Monday, April 7 at 7pm. All are welcome!
